KeepHealthCare.ORG – 3D Mammography Now Available at Mercy | Local News
Thanks to a generous donation to the hospital for women’s breast cancer services, Mercy-Centerville is now offering 3D mammography. Hologic Genius is the highest level of mammography on the market today and is a more accurate way to screen for breast cancer.
Utilizing advanced breast tomosynthesis technology, Genius exams are clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers, while simultaneously decreasing the number of women asked to return for additional testing. In addition, compression time is reduced to under 4 seconds.
In conventional 2D Mammography, overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks. A Genius exam includes a three-dimensional method of imaging that can greatly reduce the tissue overlap effect.
3D exams deliver a series of detailed breast images, allowing doctors to better evaluate breast tissue layer by layer. Studies show that 3D mammography has greater accuracy than 2D for women across a variety of ages and breast densities. It is the only FDA approved mammogram as superior for women with dense breasts.
“Annual mammogram screenings are extremely important for women over the age of 40. As a facility that is accredited by the American College of Radiology in mammography, we can perform routine mammogram screenings meeting high standards and superb image quality. 3D imaging gives our radiologists, surgeons and referring physicians access to the information they need to make an informed diagnosis,” said Kevin Bradley, director of radiology at WCCH.
The new service was made available by a generous donation from the late John Cullor who wanted to make a contribution to breast cancer care in memory of his wife. The gift established the Kathy Cullor Women’s Suite at Mercy and included a new bone density scanner for the area.
