Cayman Prep students urge everyone to use less plastic, as part of their Eco Week campaign.

Cayman Prep Primary School held its first Eco Week, April 23-27, in celebration of Earth Day and Earth Month.

The school’s Eco-Warrior group, which was set up two years ago as a way to make the school more environmentally friendly, played a major role in preparing for the week and even held an assembly to educate the school on the subject, according to a press release issued by the school.

Students, teachers and parents were encouraged to participate in various activities and initiatives, with an effort to make everyone aware of how the waste that we produce impacts the environment.

Throughout the week, several guest speakers gave presentations to students on subjects including reducing plastic waste, local sustainable farming and conserving our oceans. Speakers included representatives from Plastic Free Cayman, the National Trust, the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, Saucha, Farmacy, Charlito’s Greenhouse, the Department of Environmental Health, Vigoro and Eco Divers. Inspired by the presenters, students have been writing letters to the government, designing posters and creating their own presentations.

Students were also given numerous eco-tasks and activities to complete at home, including car-pooling, walking or cycling to school, making waste-free lunches, going on nature walks, doing a beach or road clean up, designing costumes and T-shirts for Earth Day, as well as planting seeds and saplings.
