BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier is celebrating its growth over recent years.

The Association held its annual meeting and luncheon Wednesday at Atrio Banquet Hall in Endwell.

The keynote speaker was Glenn Liebman, CEO of the statewide Mental Health

He spoke about the benefits of new state legislation that mandates mental health education in grade school.

Liebman says with all the pressures facing students these days, including cyberbullying, it’s important to reduce the stigma associated with seeking help.

And he says suicide remains a significant concern.

“We know that there’s been a spike in that unfortunately in recent years. ¬†So, the more information about suicide prevention and about depression and about anxiety, the better the outcomes will be because people have more information,” said¬†Liebman.

Liebman says he doesn’t see deterring school shootings as a major goal of this legislation because he says there is very little correlation between mental health and violence.

M-HAST also received a report on its growth going back to 2011.

It has purchased its own building on Broad Avenue in Binghamton and seen its revenues jump from 1.3 million to 2.1 million.

The outgoing Board Treasurer says much of that is attributed to large increases in private contributions, memberships and fundraising.
