KALAMAZOO, Mich. —
Mental health experts gathered in Kalamazoo on Saturday to help erase the stigma of mental illness.
Experts say about half of all mental health cases begin at 14-years or younger. It can make a teenager more likely to drop out of school, which can then spiral into unemployment, drug use and other negative behaviors.
“A mental illness is like any other medical diagnosis, and if we treat it as such then the people who need mental health care will be more likely to pursue mental health care and quite frankly that benefits the entire community,” Kevin Fischer, executive director of Michigan’s chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, said.
Mental health experts say identifying mental illness and connecting people with the resources they need is the key to healthier communities.
