MONROE, La. – The City of Monroe is continuing with their yearly tradition of affordable summer child care.

More than 700 kids are enrolled in Monroe’s summer recreation program. A six-week camp that’s not only fun for kids.. But easy on their parent’s pockets.

“Just think about the amount of money a lot of parents save by not having to put their child in child care. It’s only $6 per child so that’s 6 dollars for the whole summer, so basically you are paying 20 cents a day,” said Parks & Recreation Director, Bruce Watson.

Kids range from ages five to thirteen. Activities include playing sports, reading enrichment, arts and crafts and even a few surprises.

“We do have guest speakers coming to talk to them. The zoo is going to be coming it and we are also going to be taking a field trip to the zoo,” said Saul Adler Community Center Director, Tim Judd.

Feeding the children is also free. The summer program has a partnership with Monroe City and Ouachita Parish School Districts. Giving campers the option of two free meals a day.

“That nutritious meal. Without that a lot of kids wouldn’t even have a meal,” said Watson.

Providing more than just food and entertainment, but also a friendly and safe space to spend the summer.

“We are just trying to make it a fun time for these kids during the summer,” said Judd.

Watson added,”We call it a safe haven. We are doing our part to try to give them a safe environment also where they can enjoy their friends and stay out of trouble.”

The camp is a great deal at only six dollars per child.

It’s from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The last days for campers is July 13th.

There are slots still available but they are given on a first-come, first-served basis.
