KeepHealthCare.ORG – New flu drug may be stockpiled to protect against pandemic
A new single-dose flu drug may soon be added to the stockpile of treatments available in the event of a pandemic.
The new drug – baloxavir marboxil – is a welcome new tool in the treatment of the most serious cases of flu as some viruses have developed resistance to one of the most widely used medications – oseltamivir, also known as Tamiflu. This means doctors have just two effective flu treatments to choose from.
The US Food and Drug Administration has granted the new drug priority review and said a decision on its approval will be made by the end of this year, meaning it may be ready for the next flu season.
Roche, the multinational pharmaceutical firm that makes the drug, said it is discussing licensing with other regulatory authorities around the world.
