A commitment to expand childcare in Scotland will cost about £150 million a year more than first estimated after ministers gave in to councils’ demands.
The Scottish government said that it had reached a deal with the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (Cosla) that would result in an extra £567 million a year being invested in early learning and childcare by 2021-22, bringing total annual spending to £990 million.
The government initially estimated that increasing free childcare for three, four and some two year olds from 600 to 1,140 hours by summer 2020 would cost £840 million every year.
