My favorite explanation is that they are a long necklace of small beads that are worn by devout followers of yoga.

What are mala beads?

A mala is a necklace usually consisting of 108 beads, a 109. bead, often called a guru bead, and an acorn. The number 108 is considered a perfect three-digit number whose digits 1+0+8 add up to nine.

The numbers of the Mala can also represent the universe as One (1), Nothing (0) and All (8, or infinity). Numerology, Hinduism, Buddhism and other Eastern religions all deal with the number 108 in one way or another.

It is not uncommon to see mala bracelets of 27 or 54 beads (the number of which is always nine), or a shorter chain of 81 beads.

The 108 beads themselves can be made of various materials, such as seeds, wood or precious metals and stones. Some materials are said to have desirable properties, such as grounding, as in the case of agate, or connected to certain chakras, as in the case of jade.

The Guru bead is usually larger than the other beads, and its meaning and use will be described shortly. As far as I have learned, the acorn is a decorative ornament, but in some religions the acorn may represent the lotus flower and symbolize enlightenment.

The mala becomes an instrument used to maintain concentration during mantra repetition, and as a means of counting mantras without having to keep the actual number in mind. And, let’s face it, it can be hard to focus on meditation practice when all the factors in our lives are trying to get in our way.

How can a yogi use them in his practice?

Maybe you are the kind of yogi who wears a necklace or bracelet with a mala all day. During the practice of yoga postures (asanas) you can then hold your jewel (or place the mala on a block next to your mat. We try not to put the mala on the ground).

This is a great way to integrate mala into your practice in group classes where meditation is not emphasized.

How to use them for meditation?

To use the mala during meditation, begin by reciting the mantra at the first bead after the guru bead. Place the mala on your middle finger and surround the bead with your middle finger and thumb. The index finger is known as the finger on which the ego hangs, and the ego must be kept out of meditation.

So the index finger points to the outside of the hand and we try to move it away. While holding the first bead of the mala, say the mantra, move on to the next bead, usually holding the bead with your thumb. Repeat the same mantra. Do this until you reach the Guru’s bead, but do not recite the mantra with the Guru’s bead. Stop, meditate, turn once to the guru’s pearl and walk backwards.

One final comment: Some practitioners believe that each mala with a single mantra must be used to maintain the energy of that mantra in the mala; after using a new mantra, the energy must be restored.
