This is part 5 of a 5 part series that I have been working on for some time now. To summarize it all in a paragraph would be more than I know how to do. There is so much I want to show you, and yet so much I want to keep to myself. There are so many ways to approach fitness and to build your body, and yet I have found that most people are not looking at the big picture when it comes to fitness.

The fitness industry has come a long way in the last few years, and while we still have a long way to go, there have been some great advances in the field of exercise and health. With state of the art equipment, fitness coaches and trainers, and even new methods like High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), it’s clear that the fitness industry has been evolving as rapidly as the general public.

All of the weight lifters who came to the clinic had a common denominator: each was in dire need of help with their diet. They were doing everything right, in theory, but the weight of their body mass was steadily rising. Most had tried other programs, without success; many had failed to lose even a single pound. All of them needed help with nutrition and exercise, but there were few trainers or programs designed specifically for weight lifters, and none that offered the level of expertise and knowledge that Rick was capable of delivering.. You can assist even your most difficult customers obey the rules by using these cutting-edge techniques.

We frequently joke in the fitness business that customers are searching for “the miracle pill.” The true joke, however, is that even if such a medication existed, customers would refuse to take it.

In the fitness business, compliance — individuals doing what they know they should — is a major issue.

[This is true of the medical sector as well: miraculous cancer and diabetic medicines given by doctors are only taken 55% of the time.]

Build habits in the context of a client’s life, as we said in part 4 of this series.

It’s normal to take on too much and experience ambivalence as a result of conflicting objectives.

Rather, assist your client in changing one behavior at a time. Work with them to determine and comprehend their priorities.

Here’s something more to think about.

Most of the time, our customers aren’t rejecting our advice out of spite. Most people just do not believe these activities are feasible or important for them.

“Eat 5 veggies a day” may seem as daunting to a carnivore as climbing Everest.

So, before you provide advise, why not get some feedback from your client? When was the last time you questioned yourself:

  • What matters most to you right now?
  • What aspects of your life do you think you’re ready to change?
  • How sure are you, on a scale of 1 to 10, that you can accomplish what I’ve asked?

Each client in our business is asked this question. It informs our recommendations and involves the customer in the transformation process.

We know they won’t accomplish what we’re asking if their response is less than a 9 or 10 on a particular assignment, for example. As a result, we make the job easier.

We continue to simplify, explain, and reduce the complexity until the customer gives us a sincere 9 or 10 on the confidence scale.

People constantly want to feel like they have a choice – and that they are in control of their own life, according to research.

So, rather than being an expert, think of your customers as collaborators and yourself as a guide or facilitator. Start with the area where they are most confident.

As we think about this process further, it’s essential to remember that this isn’t simply theoretical information. This is tried and true advice.

In reality, the concepts described in this article have been effectively applied in our Lean Eating Coaching Program, a nutrition and lifestyle initiative dubbed “the world’s biggest body transformation program” by some.

Now, let’s review the essential concepts:

Change is difficult. Recognize that when we urge clients to change, we are asking them to go against some fundamental brain wiring that favors safety and stability.

To get your customers ready for change, you’ll need to do the following:

  • Speak with your client’s rider (the logical-decision-making brain);
  • the elephant (intuitive-feeling-sensing brain); and
  • design the route (the surroundings and life structures of the client)

Stop yourself from being paralyzed by analytical paralysis. We must quiet the critical self while unleashing and supporting the “flow self” via basic, meaningful activities in order to achieve improvements.

Make a difference that matters. Make sure the customer notices the change. Ask questions, pay attention, and attempt to understand their point of view.

One step at a time, make one realistic adjustment. Develop it keeping the customer in mind, and keep the change as modest and manageable as possible.

Confidence should be tested. Test and re-test the client’s trust on a regular basis. Reduce the size of the job if it is too large.

These concepts are easy to grasp and use. In fact, you may immediately begin using this easy one-habit approach in your own practice.

Pose the following questions to yourself:

  • What are the underlying ideas that govern my personal practice that are really essential to me?
  • Where am I not putting those ideas into practice? What is/are my limiting factor(s) that prohibit me from successfully completing this task?
  • What is one basic, obvious, practical, and modest habit that I can begin right away?
  • How sure am I that I’ll be able to accomplish it every day? (If your score is less than a 9/10, ease up on the assignment.)

Then, on a post-it note, write out your assignment, refer to it 10 times today, and get started!
