Egg roll in a bowl? Sure, why not?

You may have seen the In A Bowl Keto Egg Roll recipe circulating around the internet a lot. It’s one of my favorite dishes, so I had to give it my own spin! It’s very easy to cook, takes less than 30 minutes, and only requires one pan. It’s simple to clean up! We gave it an Asian twist since that is our preferred taste profile, but you are free to make it your own!

Egg Roll in a Bowl is a kind of egg roll that is served in a bowl.

Egg roll in a bowl, commonly known as “crack slaw,” is a keto-friendly Asian meal. We turned high-carb egg rolls into a low-carb meal that’s extremely delicious, dare I say more flavorful than the original?… A stir fry-like foundation of cabbage, ground pork, and sesame oil is used in this dish. It’s a quick and simple meal that takes less than 30 minutes to complete.

Stir fries are also excellent choices for people who meal prep or prepare for a large group. They keep well, are quite filling, and, of course, are very quick to prepare! This chicken stir fry and our simple keto cashew chicken are two of our other stir fry faves.

Is it Keto to eat egg roll wrappers?

The typical wonton wrappers, which are NOT low carb, are not used in this low carb egg roll in a bowl. Carbohydrates range from 4 to 8 grams per wrapper. Imagine eating three or four wrappers in one sitting. You’ll have over your daily net carb allowance before you realize it. Egg roll wrappers are likewise composed mainly of wheat flour. There is a little amount of egg in them, but they are mostly wheat, making them unsuitable for a low-inflammation diet like keto.

That’s why we devised a recipe for keto egg rolls in a bowl. It provides a wide range of Asian tastes and textures without the carbohydrates. You won’t miss the wrapper with this keto recipe, we promise.

Do Egg Rolls Contain Eggs?

The wrapping on egg rolls does contain eggs, but the egg rolls themselves do not. Originally, eggs were used to make a batter that was then baked into extremely thin crepe-like wrappers. The cabbage and pork mixture would be wrapped in these mostly egg-based wrappers. This is where the term “egg roll” was first coined.

However, we like adding eggs to our egg roll in a bowl since it provides additional flavor and a great crispy texture. To keep you satisfied for longer, we strive to create our keto dishes with a large portion size. Eggs are very satiating and a fantastic method to increase the meal’s satiety level.

Choosing a Protein Source

You may use any protein you like in this simple egg roll dish. Some individuals like ground beef, while others prefer ground chicken. The most important thing to remember is that depending on whatever protein you select, you may need to add a few more components. Because ground beef and pig are fattier meats, the meal will remain moist. However, since lean meats like ground turkey tend to dry up, you may want to add a splash of sesame or olive oil to the mix. You may also add a bit more coconut aminos or a dash of rice wine vinegar for moisture if you don’t mind the net carbohydrates.

Protein Sources

This “keto crack slaw,” as some refer to it, is all up to you. You may mix and match the proteins to create your perfect meal. The following are some possibilities:

  • Pork Grinder
  • Beef Grain
  • Turkey, ground
  • Chicken that has been ground
  • Seasoned and cooked salmon fillet- Prepare the crack slaw vegetables as usual, using chili sauce or sriracha. Then add green onions, cooked salmon, and toasted sesame oil to the shredded cabbage.

We chose ground pork in this dish because we thought it provided the greatest overall texture and taste. Experiment with different proteins to discover your favorite!

Keto-Friendly Egg Roll in a Bowl Instructions

This dish serves as a great starting point for adding any proteins you choose to your keto diet. To make one of our all-time favorite keto supper dishes right every time, follow these steps.

Garlic and ginger should be used

The ingredients that give this meal its Asian taste include garlic and ginger. We prefer using fresh garlic and ginger whenever feasible, although powdered versions will suffice.

Ginger root should be kept in the freezer. It will keep for 3-6 months in this manner, and you may grate it directly from the freezer into your meals.

The Best Coleslaw Mix

Pre-made coleslaw mix is available at most shops and is ideal for this meal. These typically include a variety of cabbage varieties as well as a few other veggies (usually carrots). If you can’t locate it, a whole head of cabbage and a couple of carrots would suffice. It should go without saying, but don’t purchase cabbage or coleslaw mix with a dressing…

Is it possible to be gluten-free and soy-free at the same time?

Soy sauce, as you may know, is derived from soybeans, which many individuals on the ketogenic diet avoid. Did you know that soy sauce includes gluten as well? Switching out the soy sauce with coconut aminos is a great way to make this dish gluten and soy free. The sap of the coconut flower is fermented to produce coconut aminos. Although coconut aminos include sugar, the taste is so intense that just a few teaspoons are required.

To avoid wheat, pick up some gluten-free soy sauce, such as tamari, if you like classic soy sauce taste. Coconut aminos and soy sauce create a wonderful keto egg roll in a bowl in any case!

Spice it up a little

The contrast between hot and sweet in an egg roll in a bowl is key. To add heat to this dish, use any hot sauce or spicy seasoning combination you like. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Sriracha– An Asian staple that adds a lot of flavor to this meal with very little effort.
  • Cut fresh jalapeos with gloves or thoroughly wash your hands afterward. If you touch jalapeos after cutting them, you will get a burning sensation in your eyes.
  • Chili Garlic Sauce– Be warned, this stuff is hot! A little chili sauce goes a long way toward giving a low-carb egg roll a lot of flavor.

  • Coconut Aminos- This delicious coconut sap is guaranteed to deliver a punch in terms of taste and that sweet-spicy combination you’re looking for.
  • Liquid Stevia- A few drops of liquid stevia is all you need to sweeten the meal and achieve a nice balance.

You’ll be able to pick and select your favorite ingredients the next time you prepare this recipe, resulting in the ideal egg roll in a bowl.

Make Use of a Hot Skillet

It’s critical to use high heat to achieve some browning on the beef; otherwise, the final meal would lack texture. It will be difficult to get any color on the meat after the veggies are added, so make sure the meat is cooked to your satisfaction before adding the vegetables. There’s also 2 tbsp of chicken broth in there to help keep the meat wet, so there’s no need to worry!

Meat with a high fat content should be used.

If you’re using a leaner ground meat like ground turkey, you may also add more fat. The veggies soak up all of the oil and taste in this dish, which is one of its best features. If you’re using ground turkey or chicken, you may want to add a few tablespoons of fat. I’d suggest using coconut oil or ghee.

Don’t Follow The Rules

In the kitchen, have some fun. This is a great dish to try new things with since you can’t go wrong. Try up different tastes by mixing in some of your favorite items.

Sesame Oil Has a Positive Impact

The sesame oil is the one ingredient in this recipe that you should definitely not leave out. This is a finishing oil that binds the whole meal together. It has the distinct Asian taste that you’ve come to anticipate from traditional Asian dishes. Don’t forget about the sesame seeds! Sesame seeds give the final dish a nice crunch and texture.

In a bowl, filling an egg roll

With coleslaw mix, pork, and sesame oil, we prefer to keep our dish pretty conventional. However, egg roll in a bowl may be tailored to your own needs and preferences based on your carb allowance and preferences. Depending on your objectives, keto recipes like this allow for a variety of substitutions and modifications. The following are some of our favorite keto egg roll in a bowl mix-ins:

  • Bell peppers, sliced—Because of the carbohydrates, your portion size of bell peppers should be lower, but the next time you prepare an egg roll in a bowl, consider throwing in a handful of sliced peppers. They provide crunch, sweetness, and a healthy dose of vegetables.
  • Carrots- If you’re using a pre-made coleslaw mix, this may not be necessary, but if you’re making your own, add some carrots. We like a lot of crisp carrots, but make sure the serving size is right for your carb needs.
  • Onion- Thinly sliced onion gives the dish a lovely caramelized sweetness. However, since this may increase the carbohydrates in your keto nutrition facts, it may be better to just use onions if you’re paleo.

For supper, nothing beats a full-bodied egg roll served in a bowl. It’s a low-carb choice that’ll keep you full and happy for a long time. Cabbage and other vegetables will increase the fiber content, which will delay digestion and keep you satisfied for longer (1).

In a bowl, garnishing an egg roll

The final result of an egg roll in a bowl is greatly influenced by garnishes. They will give the dish more texture and freshness. For a bright, fresh taste, some people choose green onions, while others like freshly sliced jalapeos. Your toppings are entirely up to you, but here are a few of our favorites:

  • Sesame oil- Sesame oil gives egg rolls the genuine taste you’re looking for.
  • Green onions- A keto method to add a little more flavor and punch without too many carbohydrates is to use green onions. Green onion also has less net carbohydrates than red onion, making it an excellent complement to this dish.
  • Egg- I know this is an egg roll in a bowl, but adding a fried egg on the top adds another layer of taste. Who doesn’t like a runny yolk?

We guarantee you’ll like this simple keto egg roll in a bowl dish no matter which garnish you pick. Play experiment with different toppings the next time you prepare this dish to discover your favorite!

Is it Ok to Eat Egg Rolls on a Keto Diet?

Egg rolls, however, are not keto-friendly. Each egg roll contains 25 grams of carbohydrates and 24 grams of net carbohydrates. This egg roll in a bowl is keto-friendly, despite the fact that it is not keto. We’ve reduced the carb count to the point that you can have two bowls and still stay below your carb limit. This dish has just 4.75 net carbohydrates per serving. So don’t put it off any longer; go in the kitchen and begin preparing this dish right now!

Keto Egg Roll in a Bowl Recipe

This dish is quick and simple to make, taking just 10 minutes to prepare and 12 minutes overall. It will remind you of those delicious egg rolls from your childhood, but without the carbohydrates.

Shredded cabbage and pork form the foundation of this dish. We used ground pork and a coleslaw mix with shredded cabbage. If you can’t locate coleslaw mix, broccoli slaw will suffice. Broccoli slaw has a little more crunch and a distinct taste than cabbage slaw, but you may use whatever you want!

We utilized liquid aminos, chicken broth or bone broth, garlic, ginger, and sriracha for sauces and spices. All of these ingredients are excellent in low-carb dishes on their own, but when combined, they create a delicious keto/paleo egg roll in a bowl. Finally, sesame oil, chopped green onions, and sesame seeds will be used to finish this “crack slaw.” When they taste all of this deliciousness, you can bet the entire family will be asking for seconds.

  • Stir in the liquid aminos and chicken broth until everything is well combined.

  • In a separate bowl, mix the minced garlic, ground ginger, and sriracha. Allow for 1-2 minutes of cooking time while the liquid decreases.

  • Stir in 12 ounces of cabbage (we use basic cole slaw mix) until all of the cabbage is coated in the liquid and spices. Remove the cabbage from the heat after it has wilted to your satisfaction. Okay, so I’m a notorious lover of Thai cuisine. I’m not just talking about spicy Thai takeout, or even Thai food in general. I’m referring to the beauty of Southeast Asian cuisine in general. One of my favorite Thai dishes is a stir fry, also known as a “stir fry” or “egg roll in a bowl.” This meal is so simple, but tastes so good. It’s made with protein-rich egg, combined with vegetables, and is cooked in a sauce. It’s also very versatile, since you can add in whatever you want to it. I have made a few versions of this dish, but I wanted to make one really simple version, so I came up with this 10-minute dinner..
