Many parents who follow a low-carb, high-fat lifestyle such as keto are amazed at the energy and health benefits it can provide, but often wonder if such a high-fat lifestyle is appropriate for their children. Below is information on what you need to know before introducing your children to the keto diet.

First, let’s talk about our current diet and the health of the average American child today.

And to top it off, there’s sugar involved! No other refined and processed carbohydrates (rice, pasta, bread, flour, etc.) that are eventually broken down in the body into glucose, i.e. sugar!

Now that the facts are clear, let’s talk about keto. The keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that teaches the body to use fat (ketones) instead of sugar (glucose) for fuel. A well-designed and executed keto diet includes adequate amounts of non-starchy vegetables, some fruits/berries, nuts, healthy fats and high-quality protein sources. In fact, keto shouldn’t be called a diet per se in terms of weight loss, but by its true definition, a way of eating. And any diet that minimizes processed foods, including carbs and sugar, belongs on my list.

That said, I have seen many people who ate very poorly, for example. B. virtually no vegetables, unhealthy processed fats, too many ketosis-friendly processed foods, and poor protein sources. The keto diet is by no means a healthier way of eating.

Unlike adults, children have a greater need for nutrients and calories to support their development and growth. The biggest concern about children and the keto diet applies to those with medication-controlled conditions who need to be watched more closely when switching to a healthy keto diet. In addition, some parents may be too strict, leading to negative attitudes towards food and eating.

One more important note: Children are often very picky and may outright refuse to eat ketogenic foods, which can lead to unwanted weight loss and/or malnutrition, although the book contains many delicious recipes that even your kids will love!

Where to start

Start phasing out processed and refined carbohydrates from your home. Start including healthy fats in your diet (avocados, olive/coconut oil, nuts, etc.), as well as good sources of protein (fish, meat, poultry, eggs, etc.).
