The Paleo Diet has been around for a while, but it was recently proposed by scientists at the University of Oxford. The Paleo Diet is based on the idea that our ancestors ate only foods that are available in the wild, and only in those times. For example, the Paleo Diet states that humans only eat foods that are available to them in the wild, and also requires the elimination of all foods that have been brought into the human diet or otherwise modified by humans. The Paleo Diet is also based on the idea that we are genetically adapted to eating the foods of our Paleolithic ancestors. “What can I eat on the Paleo diet?” you might wonder.

Eating like prehistoric humans sounds like a lot of fun. However, it raises a number of questions:

  • Is grass-fed beef akin to the wild wildlife hunted by Paleolithic people?
  • Is it okay to eat potatoes? What do you think of sweet potatoes?

In the first segment, we highlighted minimally processed foods that are commonly recommended on the Paleo diet in a “eat more” area. If you’re a Paleo purist, you’ll want to stick to that category for the majority (if not all) of your meals. 

If you’re more flexible, you’ll notice that we’ve divided highly processed foods, as well as several Paleo “no-nos,” into “eat some” and “eat less” categories.

Take, for example, ice cream. There were no freezers in ancient times. They didn’t even have Rocky Road. However, you might want to share a little scoop with your children once a week. Is the Paleo diet still working for you?
