The idea of medical marijuana seems like an obvious choice for Michigan state officials as they look to lessen the burden of veterans’ health care. Both the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Defense have formed a joint research center which is set to explore marijuana-based research and development, and if approved, to distribute the results to both agencies. But to date, the research center has yet to be established, and there are no plans to begin growing, or distributing marijuana to veterans for medical purposes.
The state of Michigan has allocated $20,000,000 to research the possible benefits of medical marijuana to veterans suffering from PTSD. The state is looking for proposals from companies that will conduct the research, and their results could be considered in the legislature next year.
